Home Learning
At Orchard Way we believe that children make progress through quality first teaching and that home learning should consolidate and complement the learning that happens in class.
EYFS (Reception Class):
Children will be given books that correspond to the phonemes they have been taught in their phonics sessions. They will be asked to re-read them to support their confidence and fluency. In addition, they will receive a “sound book” which is updated weekly. Children will choose a book from the library that they can read with an adult for pleasure. This can used for a bedtime story, for example.
Key Stage One (Year One and Two):
In Year One, children will be given a book that corresponds to their phonic knowledge, as in Reception class. Children in Year 2 who are able to read fluently will choose a book from a selection by the class teacher to ensure it is appropriate.
Maths home learning is based on the concepts and skills they have been learning in lessons that week.
In Year 2, spelling homework is based on the most recent rule taught. We do not give spelling lists to memorise for tests – tasks include word category studies and reasoning and correcting activities.
Key Stage Two (Year Three to Year 6):
In Key Stage Two, children are encouraged to read for pleasure for at least twenty minutes a day. Depending on their level of fluency, this will be with a book they have chosen from the library or one that has been chosen by adult.
As in Key Stage One, maths home learning is based on the concepts and skills they have been learning in lessons that week and spelling homework is based on the most recent rule taught.
During the school holidays, the children have the opportunity to undertake enrichment tasks linked to prior learning.
